In the effort to create a common Singapore identity in the last fifty years, we lost some of our ancestral links because they pulled us in different directions.
Moving ahead, however, we will need to recover some of these links. However strong, the Singapore identity can never be strong enough because we lack mass. Quite the opposite, the Singapore identity is attractive only because it has at its core a multiracial and multi-religious ideal.
To be Singaporean should not require us to be less than what we were originally. To be Singaporean is to be larger than what we were originally because our hearts and our minds must expand to embrace others.
Genealogies root us to our past. We can't be part of a strong family if we do not know who were our ancestors and therefore how we are related to one another. It is from the past that we draw lessons and inspiration for the future, as a great tree is held in place by deep roots.
For this reason, the work of Genealogy Society Singapore is important for our common future. It is such sentiments, whether in genealogies, cemeteries, historical figures, heritage sites or anniversaries, which make us whole and organic, and which become a source of deep strength.
